TROUBLESHOOTING & FEEDBACK

Why am I experiencing difficulty playing online?

Online play may be affected by any number of factors, including the distance from your opponents, the speed of your connection, and your local network/router settings. Make sure your connection is optimized for online gaming, and use the Legacy Kollection's menus to make sure you are connecting with players closer to your region for best results. In particular, PlayStation 4 and pre-Series Xbox consoles will greatly benefit from optimized online settings.

I think I've found a bug. Where can I report that?

We'd love your detailed reports via this feedback form. Please offer as many details as you can – what you experienced, what you were doing when it happened, and which platform you're playing on. That's all really helpful information to the team when it comes to finding and fixing issues!

Are there any known bugs?
Yes, so if you spot these, you don't need to report them – the team is already on it.

  • Nintendo Switch 1 & 2: controller icons sometimes show up as incorrect buttons.
A fix has been identified and will be deployed in a future update.
  • Nintendo Switch 1: The rewind functionality in MK Mythologies: Sub-Zero, MK: Special Forces, and MK Trilogy is not working correctly. A fix has been identified and will be deployed in a future update.

PLATFORM SUPPORT

On which platforms can you play Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection?

The Kollection is available on Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam.

Are there any differences in Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection between the gaming platforms?

All the content is the same across all platforms – the library of 23 playable games, the interactive documentary, the kombatants history, and the music player included.

Is Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection verified on Steam Deck?

Yes! We hope you enjoy playing the PC version on Valve's handheld.

GAME LIBRARY

Why do you include the games you did?

While Mortal Kombat's origin lies in the arcades, many others fell in love with the franchise on their home and handheld consoles. We wanted to support as many platforms as possible not only to revive your own nostalgic memories of Mortal Kombat, but to paint a fuller picture of the history.

Why does the Kollection stop where it does? Why aren't more modern games included? Why isn't my favorite game in this collection?

Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection was designed to celebrate the arcade era and the earliest games in the series, many of which have been unavailable for years. Our mission was to tell the story of the creation of the Mortal Kombat franchise, its creators, and the groundbreaking impact of the series. The games we included in the Kollection focus on the formative years of the franchise to support that story.

Are there any games included in the Kollection that may surprise fans?

The incredibly rare WaveNet version of Ultimate MK3 – Midway's early experiment into online gaming – is playable here for the first time since 1997.

Also, the PlayStation prequel games, Mythologies: Sub-Zero and Special Forces, are reissued here for the first time. Our Save/Load anywhere and Rewind features mean you can finally see all these legendarily difficult games have to offer.

And while not a surprise, Mortal Kombat 4 has been accurately emulated in its original arcade form and the studio has added an optional 4x render mode to give this 3D milestone a modern sheen.

TECHNOLOGY & NEW FEATURES

Are these emulations or rebuilt from the ground up?

These are emulations of the original games, preserved as you remember them, so everything will feel very comfortable and recognizable. Where possible, we've added optional quality-of-life improvements and created easier access to secret developer menus you might have accessed back in the day – for instance, the ABACABB and DULLARD codes on Genesis for Mega Drive are now menu options – but these are toggles that the player can choose to turn on or off. So if you still want to punch in the blood code yourself, you can! Digital Eclipse feels strongly about preserving the original experience for both fans of the originals and new players who want to learn how their favorite franchise evolved.

Is all content left as it originally appeared, or have some elements of these games been removed or modified?

The team has not altered or watered down the original content in any way. Many of the original games, including the arcade versions, did offer a switch to disable blood and violence, so those have been preserved for players who wish to use them – but if content or a setting was in the original game, it's preserved here. The only significant change to the behavior of any of the original games was dramatically reducing the loading times for Mortal Kombat Trilogy on PlayStation. This makes Shang Tsung's morphs now load immediately; also, stages load roughly 75 percent faster than they originally did.

Has the studio added any enhancements, such as CRT filters, scan lines, aspect ratio options?

Yes, several options have been added for players who might prefer some modern conveniences, none of which affect the original gameplay.

  • Players can turn on CRT filters on the arcade and console games and LCD filters on the handheld games. The CRT filter is available in two forms, flat and curved, so that it can more accurately represent a CRT display. Handheld players can also adjust the screen tint to match the look of different versions of classic handheld hardware.
  • Aspect ratio settings include the original, a full-screen, and a wide setting to stretch the graphics to fit the screen, which some players prefer. Bezels and surrounds can also be toggled on and off per the player's preference.  You'll also see additional subtle effects, like reflections on the bezel overlay when that's turned on (it's a player option as well), that better replicate the original experience.
  • An advanced rendering mode can be activated on Mortal Kombat 4 to significantly increase the visual fidelity of the characters.  which gives the 3D graphics of this pioneering arcade game a smoother, more modern look.
  • In Mortal Kombat Trilogy, Shang Tsung's morphs caused noticeable load times, disrupting gameplay. We’ve eliminated those load times.
  • Additionally, also save and rewind functionality, which may ease frustration  with some notoriously difficult games. Many cheats and secret menus are now more easily accessed using toggles from the Kollection's menus.

You'll find more enhancements as you explore the Legacy Kollection.

What gameplay features are included that help players learn and improve?

Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection lets players put context-sensitive move lists directly on the screen during gameplay, including multiple finishing moves at the end of matches. Deeper move lists are available at the pause menu. This feature gives veterans and novices alike everything they need to try new characters without having to go looking for move inputs.

In addition, the studio has added a training mode to the games that never had one. On-screen input feedback helps players learn new characters and create devastating combos. Players can finally master all the moves from the arcade and home games on their own terms.

What is the Fatality Trainer?

The most satisfying conclusion to any Mortal Kombat match is a finishing move. Fatalities, Babalities, Animalities, Brutalities, and Friendships can all be practiced in an exclusive mode that freezes the timer and allows rapid restarts. On-screen indicators let you know when you're in range to execute the move of your choice.

Even if you don't need to practice, Fatality Trainer is a really fun time sink that lets you see all the famous finishing moves, one after another.

What is Versus Mode?

Players will appreciate the new streamlined Versus Mode, which minimizes the menus of the original games for rapid-paced local play.  For the first time in these classic titles, players can select the stage, effortlessly activate Kombat Kodes, tweak the timers, and choose their customized controls, then enjoy lightning-fast match restarts. Some games even let you choose stages and options that aren't available when playing normally.

How are you addressing the secret codes and unlockable content in the original games?

Mortal Kombat has a bevy of secrets to find, many hidden behind secret codes or inputs. Even in Versus Modes, there are particular codes that can be input to modify how the game was played or to give an opponent an advantage. We want to bring these out of the shadows when reintroducing the franchise to the audience – the ability to access secret characters or menus that exist through tedious code inputs, for example, or to quickly access hidden bosses that players may never have known about or were never skilled enough to face. By giving our audience the keys to easily unlock these secrets (if they desire), it removes a barrier that will allow players to jump right into the unique experiences that Mortal Kombat is renowned for.

Will you support controller profiles for different players and different types of controllers, such as fightsticks?

Players can create and switch between multiple controller or joystick setups to match their preferred playstyle or specific game needs. We have also streamlined the mapping process through a simplified UI and controller interface which will make it easy to map controls exactly how players want them for a variety of situations. Also, the game is fully compatible with PS4 controllers on PS5, ensuring that players with a large collection, or a favorite PS4 controller can utilize them.

ONLINE PLAY

Which games can I play online?
The following games are playable on PC and console, including PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One, S and X, and Switch 1 and Switch 2.

  • Mortal Kombat (Arcade, SNES, Genesis)
  • Mortal Kombat II (Arcade, SNES, Genesis, 32X)
  • Mortal Kombat 3 (Arcade, SNES, Genesis)
  • Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 (Arcade, SNES)
  • Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 - Wavenet (Arcade)
  • Mortal Kombat Trilogy (PlayStation)
  • Mortal Kombat 4 (Arcade) – All PCs and consoles except for the original Nintendo Switch.

Technical limitations prevented MK4 online play on the original Switch hardware.

How does online play work?

Mortal Kombat Legacy Kollection offers a fully featured online experience allowing players to relive their favorite version of Mortal Kombat online for the first time, complete with GGPO Rollback netcode. Our team spent a lot of time testing online play and discussing how many frames are needed for optimal performance and response with the right amount of rollback for fairness and smooth play. Even after launch we will continue to test and tweak based on post-launch feedback.

Matchmaking on launch day is handled by a quick-match system, specific to each title – so when you're looking for a match in Mortal Kombat II for Super NES, choose that, and the game will seek out an opponent.  In the weeks following launch, we will add Online Arcade, a  system where you can create lobbies, choose the players, and rotate games for the tastes of your private group of friends. We're finalizing the UI details on these features now.

Will Online Arcade allow players to create private lobbies for online play?

Online Arcade will give players the opportunity to create private or public rooms, select the games they want to play, and invite friends to join in. Each room can host up to 16 players, and multiple games can be played simultaneously; think of it as your personal Mortal Kombat game room, filled with just the games you love most. On individual games within the room, players rotate playing in a classic arcade "winner stays" queue structure or they can choose to simply spectate.

‍This Online Arcade feature is much more robust than Quick Match and is more ambitious than what Digital Eclipse has done in its previous games, so it demands additional testing both internally and from external partners before it's ready for players to enjoy. We expect this feature to be added via an update within a few weeks after launch, but this is dependent on internal and first-party approval timeframes, which can vary between platforms. Keep an eye on our social channels for updates.

Do you support crossplay?

Crossplay is something we'd love to add but it is not available at launch and we are not committing. It's a little more complex than it might look, so we're focused on making sure same-system online matches work smoothly, and then we'll take a second look at if cross-play is feasible here. At the moment we are not committing to adding cross-play.

Are online matches ranked?

At present matches are not part of a ranking system, but each player's personal history is reflected in their Kombat Kard. The team is aware of the desire for ranked matches and is discussing this internally.

Why is there no online play for handheld games?

While the development team worked hard to add online play for as many games as possible, the handheld games relied on physical link cables which transferred data in very specific ways. Trying to replicate that system in an online environment results in additional instability and uncertainty. Due to that, we felt putting more focus on the arcade and console games and adding as much online functionality to those titles as possible would make for a better overall experience.

PHYSICAL EDITIONS

Why do you feel it was important to release a physical version?

A large part of what we do at Digital Eclipse is to preserve gaming's past and make it accessible for players in the future. We want people to be able to experience and understand these critical moments and innovations in gaming history for years to come. Physical editions help us get as close to that goal as possible.

Where can I purchase a physical edition?

You can preorder at atari.com or through major local and online retailers.

What's the difference between the various physical editions? When do they ship to customers?

The Day 1 Edition is the Standard Edition of the game, but the preorder includes one of four exclusive slipcovers based on the outfits of Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Reptile, and Smoke. This edition will ship to customers on December 12.

The Deluxe Edition ships in an exclusive Steelbook case and includes collectibles like trading cards, a magnet, and reproductions of the original arcade marquees and flyers. This edition will ship to customers on December 12.

The Kollector's Edition comes with a Goro controller holder, a hardcover art and lore book, a set of enamel pins, and a collectible coin. Preorders for the Kollector's Edition ended August 31, and this edition is sold out. Customers who ordered the Legacy Kollection will be shipped a standard edition for the game on December 12. The rest of the Kollector's Edition will ship in 2026.

When will digital keys be sent to customers who purchased a physical copy for PC?

Keys will mail on December 12, the day that physical copies first ship.

Can I order a physical version for Xbox?

Xbox physical pre-orders were conducted through Limited Run Games and ended on August 31, 2025. There will be no restock upon launch.

ABOUT THE DEVELOPER

Why should Mortal Kombat fans be excited that Digital Eclipse is creating the Kollection?

Digital Eclipse has a reputation for developing very unique, interactive documentaries that weave classic games and documentary content together in a way that truly understands and celebrates a game or game franchise. They have been described as the “gold standard” and “the Criterion Collection of the gaming industry.”

Digital Eclipse has been leading restoration and preservation efforts with its game releases. Seamlessly weaving video content, playable games, making-of materials, quality of life improvements, and new features, each ‘Interactive Documentary’ tells the unique, compelling (and most importantly!) highly-playable story of its subject.  Critic and fan response to our new ‘Interactive Documentary’ format has been overwhelmingly positive, including BAFTA, GDC Awards, and Golden Joystick award consideration.

Did Digital Eclipse use AI in the development of Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection?

No. Digital Eclipse has a standing policy to not use AI tools during development or to introduce AI content into their projects.

THE FUTURE

Will additional games or content be added as DLC?
We have nothing to announce right now, but we're open to the idea!

What's next for Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection?

The development team will be monitoring player feedback, as always. We expect to update the game with improvements on a regular basis. If you encounter a bug or issue, you can help us by explaining what you experienced with as much detail as you can offer…and don't forget to let us know which platform you're playing on! We appreciate your reports, and our team will be standing by.

As noted above, the Online Arcade feature is currently in development, which will give players the opportunity to create private or public rooms, select the games they want to play, and invite 16 players to join in. We expect this feature to be added via an update within a few weeks after launch, but this is dependent on internal and first-party approval timeframes, which can vary between platforms.

Also in the weeks that follow launch, The Krypt will be expanded with a new feature: The Khronicle of the Realms. This special illustrated history explains and explores the epic conflicts depicted in the first four arcade games and gives all fans a clear, concise record of the battles between Outworld, Earthrealm, Edenia, and more. This will be added in a future update at no additional cost.
